Five Things That Might Damage Your Tarp

Posted on: 2 June 2022

Tarps can be very useful given how durable they are, but not all tarps are the same. If you need a tarp for a business-related purpose or a tarp for your truck, it's important to know what might damage your tarp so you can choose the right one.

1. Environmental Hazards

Industrial tarps are highly durable and can come in several forms. A tarp can be designed to be fire-resistant, resistant to corrosion, or anti-static. Therefore, you will want to consider the environment in which the tarp will be used and what you will be protecting with the tarp.

When tarps are used in certain industries, they need to be highly durable. These include in transportation, aerospace, agriculture, commercial, manufacturing, and warehousing. Neoprene and vinyl tarps are durable enough to be used in a broad range of industrial applications. Depending on the coating that is applied, they can also be effective against gas and fuel.

2. Strong Winds

Even if you think you will not be using a tarp under harsh conditions, many tarps are not able to handle strong winds and will become damaged. Not only must the tarp be made out of durable materials but it must also have a tie-down that allows you to hold the tarp in place so that it does not blow off.

3. Cold Weather

Usually, you won't have to worry about your tarp being exposed to cold weather. However, if your tarp is exposed to very cold weather, you may need the tarp to be made out of heavy-duty materials so that it does not become damaged.

4. UV Rays

If the tarp will be outdoors, it's important to make sure that it is resistant to UV rays. Otherwise, constant exposure to UV rays will cause the tarp to degrade over time. For example, if you are hauling agricultural products and need to protect them, you'll need the tarp to have a coating that allows it to resist constant exposure to the sun.

5. Moisture

Most tarps are resistant to moisture to some extent. However, some tarps are better at resisting moisture than others. With the wrong tarp, moisture can seep through and damage the product underneath. This is especially a problem when you are transporting agricultural products and moisture can seep through and cause your product to rot. Once you have tried out a variety of custom tarps, you'll be glad you took the time to choose tarps that are highly durable.
